Project Description

This project is an innovative approach to building a dual-locus teaching and research hub of Korean studies, with particular focus on Korean law and history. The participating institutions are the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon in Lyon, France, and the Université de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland. Our project is grounded in the genuinely collaborative spirit and agenda of the two European universities that are brought together by their shared commitment to promote Korean studies. While our teaching activities are centered in Europe, we pursue the goal of building a global research center of Korean legal history, with close collaboration with scholars in North America and Asia. This project is part of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) Overseas Korean Studies Incubation Program 2012-2015.

Participant Institutions

Project activities at the primary hub of the project of Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) de Lyon are carried out by the Institut d’Asie Orientale (Lyon Institute for East Asian Studies, IAO). IAO was established in 1992 to bring together scholars in social Sciences and humanities of East Asia, with focus on legal history, urban history, economics, sociology, and anthropology. ENS is a graduate school with Masters and Ph.D. students and a strong emphasis on research in humanities and social sciences. IAO is affiliated with a number of other research institutions in Lyon, including the University of Lyon.

Project activities at our partner institution at the Université de Geneva are centered in the Department of East Asian Studies (ESTAS, Département d’Etudes Est-Asiatiques). Having emerged as an independent department in 2011, ESTAS is one of the most comprehensive East Asian Studies program in the French-speaking world, offering Masters and Ph.D programs in culture, language, history, society, economics, politics, external relations, and development cooperation.

The project also collaborates with the faculty of the Department of History at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, U.S.A.
